Partisan bickering a disgrace to all voters

On Oct. 31, I volunteered at the Gleneagles neighborhood to help distribute literature for a candidate. Upon returning home I read the Oct. 31 Maryland Independent, “Altercations between electioneers reported.” I can’t speak about the supposed incident(s) of last week, but I can write about what I saw today, Oct. 31, at the Gleneagles early voting location.

I was distributing campaign literature with my back to the polling place around noon when I heard a ruckus behind me. I turned around to see a heated in-your-face discussion between a candidate and a Democratic volunteer (as evidenced by the literature she was distributing). The candidate then turned his attention to other onlookers. The female then walked behind the candidate, shoved him in the back and grabbed literature out of his back pocket. She then scurried off. The candidate called the police. He asked me if I witnessed the incident. I told him yes. Three squad cars showed up and the officers spoke with the candidate and then they left. They did not question me as to what I saw. I am assuming that no report was filed. I am further speculating that the term “assault” carries a different meaning when it comes to politicking in a Democratic stronghold.

I have lived and voted in Charles County for 44 years. Previous electioneering was peaceful and cordial between opponents (and their poll workers). The more recent partisan politics and bickering is a disgrace to all voters. Sidney O. Marcus III, Waldorf
