Region cross country championsh­ips roundup

The Lackey Chargers boys won their second straight region title on Thursday at Fort Washington Park in Prince George’s County, scoring 28 points.

The Chargers had four runners in the top 10 to easily prevail in achieving the team title.

Senior Raymond Bolton crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 19 minutes 50.63 seconds. Senior Montez Berry followed in fourth (20:03.97), senior Sam Guzzone was fifth (20:12.44). Senior Garrett Batchelor grabbed the 10th spot (21:09.66), while freshman Timothy Warren finished 13th (21:20.11)

The boys race champion was senior Yontan Weldeberuk from Internatio­nal School-Langley Park of Prince George’s County (18:26.36). Langley Park ended up second behind Lackey in the team standings with 53 points.

McDonough finished with 91 points.

Junior Namen Parker took eighth in the boys race for the Rams with a time of 20:57.48 and senior Camdin Edge was 14th (21:23.77).

Lackey and McDonough did not have enough runners to achieve a team score for the girls race, but each school did take home top honors.

Chargers junior Annie Landgraf won the race in 22:19.59, while Rams sophomore Kavina McDonald took second in 23:28.91. Lackey sophomore Leah Dobry fourth overall took 11th (29:16.87).

Largo of Prince George’s County was the only school to qualify for a team title and did so with 15 points.

The 1A state championsh­ips will be held Saturday at Hereford High School in Baltimore County.

The North Point boys placed fifth in the event which was competed at Arundel High School in Anne Arundel County.

The Eagles placed fifth in the team standings with 139 points. Severna Park of Anne Arundel won the region title with 29 points.

North Point had two runners in the top 15. Sophomore Joshua Doughty was seventh (16:57.40) and junior Devion Bryant took 13th (17:25.10).

Junior Sam Keeny of South River in Anne Arundel County was the boys race champion (16:25.30).

The North Point girls were eighth overall with 209 points. Severna Park claimed the region title with 44.

Sophomore Shannon Short was the first Eagles runner to finish, taking 36th overall in 22:56.10. Leonardtow­n sophomore Nelle Ray won the girls race (19:11.20).

The 4A state championsh­ips will be held Saturday at Hereford High School in Baltimore County.
