Chesapeake Choral Arts Society performs ‘Gloria’ settings
The Chesapeake Choral Arts Society will present a glorious concert featuring different settings of “Gloria” at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 and at 3:30 p.m. on April 14. Arnold Freed’s Gloria is a very powerful modern work performed with brass ensemble and timpani. The Haydn Gloria in Excelsis Deo is a very traditional setting of the work. Dufay’s Gloria was written in the 1400s, and the medieval tone is haunting and more somber than the other two settings.
A highlight will be the premiere performance of The “Gloria” Variations by W.G. Pete Stokes which will feature the group’s director emeritus, Michael Santana, as a soloist.
Each work in the concert exemplifies “Glory to God in the Highest” and concludes with Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria.
Soloists Amy Statz Dolan and Hannah Baslee will be returning for this eternal work. Soprano Statz Dolan is a graduate of Western Michigan University and the University of South Carolina and furthered her opera training at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. She was a U.S. Air Force “Singing Sergeant” for 12 years. Mezzo-soprano Baslee is a graduate of Concordia University Texas, where she received a B.A. in vocal performance and earned her masters degree in vocal performance at the University of Texas, El Paso.
Performances will be at St. Joseph Catholic Parish Center at 4590 St. Joseph’s Road in Pomfret. Tickets can be purchased online at chesapeakechoral.com or at the door. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for students, seniors and military.
