Smith announces Indian Head mayoral run
To face off with incumbent Paulin
Councilman Curtis Smith, Indian Head’s councilman of the last four years, announced at Mattingly Park on Thursday that he is running for mayor.
“I chose the Mattawoman Creek as the backdrop for my announcement because it represents the beauty which is Indian Head,” said Smith.
Smith served as an airman in the United States Air Force for 10 years on active duty and two years on reserve duty. Smith has also served on the Mar yland Municipal Le ague Hometown Emergency Preparedness Advocacy Committee, the Charles County Public Schools’ DadVisory Council and School Safety Advisory Council, Southern Maryland Advisory Council on Civil Rights and the National League of Cities’ Community Economic Development Committee and the NLC Information Technology Committee.
Smith was first elected to the Indian Head town council at-large in 2015.
“During my tenure, the town has experienced positive growth and economic stabilization,” said Smith.
As mayor, Smith said he seeks to promote community and economic well-being through updating the comprehensive plan and refining the economic development plan for Indian Head that supports local businesses and entrepreneurship; strengthen community partnerships by hosting quarterly forums to gauge residents’ concerns; and fund the future by exploring new ways to put the town’s utilities on a path of self-sufficiency, increase non-tax revenue as a percent of town revenue and maintain and enhance the town’s credit rating.
Smith said that during his time as councilman, he developed innovative approaches to town operations, provided improved equity within the town, supported the Indian Head workforce with the College of Southern Maryland and was recently appointed to serve on the National League of Cities’ Community and Economic Development Federal Advocacy Committee.
Smith seeks to “improve our process to improve our results,” as Indian Head’s next mayor.
He’ll be up against oneterm incumbent Mayor Brandon Paulin.
Indian Head is holding its elections on May 7 at the Village Green Pavilion at 100 Walter Thomas Road from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
