Application for student loan debt relief is now available
The Maryland Higher Education Commission secretary, James D. Fielder, announced that the application for the Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit is now available. In an effort to streamline the process for residents who have graduate or undergraduate student loan debt, MHEC will offer residents the opportunity to submit their application and documents online. Those who do not have access to a computer may still submit their application and documents through the mail. Applications will be available in the Maryland Higher Education Commission lobbies, located at 6 North Liberty St. and 200 West Baltimore St. in Baltimore. Applicants may also call 410-7674859 and request a copy be sent to them.
In order to be eligible to receive a tax credit for the 2019 tax year, applicants must:
• Complete and submit an application to the Maryland Higher Education Commission by Sept. 15 either electronically or through the post office.
• Maintain Maryland residency for the 2019 tax year.
• Have incurred at least $20,000 in total undergraduate and/or graduate student loan debt.
• Have at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt remaining when applying for the tax credit.

CSM Foundation holds golf classic Aug. 15
The College of Southern Maryland Foundation’s Golf Classic returns to Swan Point Country Club in Issue for the 28th annual event on Thursday, Aug. 15. Proceeds from this annual event will benefit student success and athletic programs at CSM.
Through the years, the golf classic has raised more than $1 million. For the 18th consecutive year, the Grand Tournament Sponsor is Marrick Homes. CSM Foundation Director Gary Simpson is the chairman for his third year.
The Sip and Swing will occur simultaneously with the Golf Classic, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event is open to first-time golfers or experienced players to enjoy interactive clinics featuring putting, chipping and full-swing techniques followed by a food and wine tasting. The Sip and Swing is sponsored by the Southern Maryland Women’s League.This year’s Golf Classic will debut a unique CSM Alumni Row that will feature a flag with the graduate’s name and year of completion. The flag will be featured at CSM Foundation events throughout the year. Proceeds will benefit the CSM alumni scholarship.
Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and refreshments are included with several contests, prizes and awards. Deadline to register is Aug. 2.
Sip and Swing registration begins at 10:30 a.m., with clinics at 11 a.m., food and wine tasting at 12:30 p.m. and awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased through Aug. 2. Sponsorships are available, and include opportunities for exposure in marketing materials and social media campaigns. The deadline for sponsorship is Aug. 2. Mudd House hosts Houdini presentation July 20
The Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum will host a talk on the famous escape artist and magician Harry Houdini at 1 p.m. on July 20 in the exhibit building, at 3725 Dr. Samuel Mudd Road in Waldorf. Leo Hevia will discuss the links between Houdini and U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
Even though they lived a generation apart, Lincoln was a childhood hero of Houdini, who collected many books and Lincoln memorabilia. In later life, Houdini also exposed many of the fake spiritualists who claimed to have made contact with the dead president.
The talk is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
The Mudd House Museum is open from 11 am to 4 pm for guided tours. The last tour begins at 3:30 p.m. Tours of the House are $7 for adults, $2 for children aged 6-11, and children 5 and under are free.
Extension to hold fall vegetable workshop Aug. 1
The University of Maryland Extension will hold a Fall Vegetable Seed Starting Workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 1 at 9501 Crain Highway in Bel Alton. The best time to start planning for a late season harvest is while the heat of summer is still here. Whether growing in containers, raised beds or in-ground, learn practical ways to extend the harvest.
This workshop will feature both a presentation and a “get your hands dirty” hands-on portion. No prior gardening experience is needed.
The $10 registration fee includes one sturdy, white nursery tray, one 72-cell tray insert, potting mix to fill the trays and seeds to get your fall vegetable garden off to a great start. Each participant will leave with a planted flat to grow out and later transplant into the garden. This event is open to the public with content designed for anyone interested in getting started with or learning more about a fall vegetable garden.
