McNamara trimmed the deficit to 7-6 when quarterback Kenneth Prince Jr., found the end zone from one yard out, but the Mustangs were unable to draw even when Jacob Pavkov pushed his extra point attempt wide left.

Midway through the third quarter, McNamara was on the verge of taking its first lead of the day when Pavkov lined up for a 28-yard field goal attempt. But St. Mary’s Ryken senior Kirk Mitchell blocked the attempt, scooped up the loose ball and raced 75 yards for a touchdown that extended the visitors’ lead to 14-6 with 6 minutes 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

St. Mary’s Ryken gained some breathing room early in the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Trevor Nored connected with Will Johnson on a 36yard scoring strike for a 21-6 lead with 8:21 remaining.

McNamara countered with a 64-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown toss from Prince to Kenneth Womack that narrowed the gap to 21-12 with 6:53 remaining, but the Knights devoured most of the clock courtesy of short runs from Bowman.

Things started about as badly as possible for the Patriots in Friday night’s SMAC crossover contest versus the visiting Cavaliers as they turned the ball over on two of their first three plays.

After trailing 3-0, Northern eventually settled in to knock off Calvert in dominant fashion. Northern (2-0) took a 7-3 lead to the half, then took command in the second quarter behind a pair of JP Gross touchdown runs to lead 22-3. Calvert (11) pulled to within 22-10 on a long touchdown pass, but Keith Parks scored on a 57-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away.

The Hurricanes put 40 or more points for the second straight week in shutting out the visiting Panthers in a SMAC crossover contest on Friday night.
