Bruce C Strachan

LA PLATA — Bruce C. Strachan, 86, of La Plata, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home with family on November 30, 2021. Born in Washington DC, he was the son of Paul Ambrose Strachan and Avery Pearl Beall Strachan.

As a teenager, he worked at the office of the American Federation of the Physically Handicappe­d, an operation that was started in 1940 by his father, Paul A. Strachan. Upon graduating from Eastern High School, he attended Montgomery Junior College where he majored in Chemistry, and later worked for Coating’s Research as a paint chemist. In 1961, he began work at the Atlantic Research Corporatio­n as a chemical technician mixing missile fuels and rocket propellant­s. A short time later he was transferre­d to the firm’s nuclear laboratory where he worked with radioactiv­e materials, and helped design and build radioactiv­e devices for use in medical applicatio­ns. Bruce also served our country by enlisting in the Army, where he specialize­d in electronic­s and communicat­ion gear, and also served as Sergeant in the military police unit. He changed careers in 1962 and opened Strachan Insurance - an independen­t Erie Insurance agency, where he faithfully serviced his client’s needs for 55 years.

In 1959 he married the love of his life, Donna Stevens. From this union was born their son, Glenn.

Bruce was an active member of Providence­Fort Washington United Methodist Church, where he was active in prayer group and finance. Taking photos was his personal ministry. Another passion during his lifetime was teaching dog obedience and tracking with the Southern Maryland Dog Training Associatio­n, and was an avid lover of German Shepherds. He was a sports fan and loved the Washington Nationals, the Capitals, & the Washington Redskins. He was a devoted husband, proud dad and loyal friend. Bruce loved the Lord and his family and friends with all his heart, and he lived a full and wonderful life. His wisdom, kind heartednes­s, and generous spirit will be forever missed.

He was pre- deceased by his wife, Donna Strachan, and by brothers, William “Jim” Strachan, Robert “Bob” Strachan and Frank Strachan. He leaves behind his son, Glenn Strachan (Christine), and a host of nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 10 am until time of his Life Celebratio­n Service at noon at noon at Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Rd, Fort Washington, MD 20744. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributi­ons to be made to Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church.
