Producer, writer and director Eli Roth hosts this new paranormal anthology series, which presents stories of hauntings that have had a devastating effect upon the lives of the people who have experienced them. The series draws upon both eyewitness accounts, as well as reconstructions and re-enactments that play out like mini-horror films. In the series premiere, “Portal to Hell,” when a single mother and her young son rent an old house in the country, they discover the place is filled with ghosts — and not all of them are friendly.
10 p.m. on HBO Real Time With Bill Maher
Host Bill Maher reaches a milestone as his popular (if often polarizing) weekly series returns to open its 20th season. His guests are still to be announced, but one topic that’s sure to be up for discussion is the ongoing pandemic. Maher, who was forced to do the show remotely from his home for a few months in 2020, expressed hope in his closing Season 19 remarks that he would return to a “more normal” reality this month. Instead, the Omicron variant drove another spike in coronavirus cases over his hiatus.
