Historic Sotterley to host ‘Journeys For Change’ webinar

- Ellynne Brice Davis

Historic Sotterley Plantation in Hollywood will hold a free webinar titled “Journeys For Change” with Joseph McGill 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26.

McGill, who is the founder of The Slave Dwelling Project, will discuss the struggles, challenges and triumphs of his work. He has been visiting sites across the country for more than a decade, sleeping in structures where enslaved people slept, to bring awareness to their lives and stories. He has slept in Sotterley’s Slave Cabin twice, and 2022 marks the 10th year of Sotterley’s partnership with him.

McGill is a history consultant for Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina. He has also served as a National Park Service Park Ranger at Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston.

The event is a part of the Common Ground Initiative and is made possible by the support of Maryland Humanities, and the Maryland Heritage Area Authority.

A royal cook-off is coming

An article by Karla Adams in the Jan. 11 edition of The Washington Post stated that Buckingham Palace is seeking a prize-winning dessert to honor the queen’s unprecedented 70 years on the throne.

On February 6, Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British monarch to celebrate seven decades of rule, and the United Kingdom will dedicate a new dessert to the 95-year-old queen after a nation-wide competition.

The royal pudding cook-off is open to any British resident who is at least eight years of age. Five finalists will compete in a live event at the London department store Fortnun & Mason.

The word “pudding” in Britain extends to mean all desserts and not just to what Americans generally refer to as pudding.
