Annual appraiser fair held
St. Clement’s Island Museum held its annual appraisal fair 10 a.m, to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Coltons Point.
The fair was presented by the St. Mary’s County Museum Division of Recreation and Parks and the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County and sponsored by the Friends of the St. Clément’s Island and Piney Point Museums.
Individuals were able to get dolls appraised by Linda Neeley, former President of the BlackEyed Susan Doll Club. Coins, currency coins, medals and tokens were seen by William E. Parran, the owner and operator of Parran Coin Company. Certified gemologist and appraiser Shari Mesh viewed jewelry and Henry Lane Hull was on hand to look at fine arts, pottery, glassware, silver, furniture and art. Hull and his wife Lisa are the proprietors of Commonwealth Antiques and Appraisals in Wicomico Church, Va.
I visited with Dorie Lear, who has been an appraiser for 27 years, including 19 with Homestead Auction.
He recognized what my item was even before I’d finished unwrapping it from its protective packaging. I’d brought a juicer, made in Japan, identifiable by the number painted on the bottom. I paid $2.50 for this little ceramic find at a local antique store’s going-out-of-business sale last month. Mr. Lear’s expert opinion of its value? Twenty-five to 30 dollars. Not too bad of an investment, I’d say.
However, the person in line ahead of me presented a framed document bearing George Washington’s signature dating from 1783. It’s value? Approximately $2,500.00. You just never can tell what you might have hiding in your closet, in a kitchen cabinet, in a desk drawer, or in your jewelry box.
Upcoming events at the St. Clement’s Island Museum include the Maryland Day celebration March 25 and the First Landing Wine and Arts Festival on April 9.
