PRINCE FREDERICK — Susan McClanahan

( Nancy) Susan Davis McClanahan passed away peacefully on January 18, with her husband, Mark, by her side. A relentlessly caring, fiercely loyal, generous, classy, hard-working, creative, bright-natured gardener, salesperson, cook, shopper, walker, decorator, wife, daughter, sister, step-mother, step-grandmother, aunt, and cousin, Susan leaves an immense presence in the hearts of the many people who knew and loved her.

Susan was born in Salisbury, MD on January 20, 1954, to Robert M. Davis and the late Grace Taylor Davis. She grew up on the family farm in Wango, MD and graduated from Pittsville High School in 1972. In the early 1980’s, Susan moved to Southern Maryland to open a ski shop, living in Waldorf. She later moved to La Plata and then Prince Frederick. Susan considered her marriage to Mark in February, 2011 the best thing she ever did. Her face lit up every time she saw him.

Susan was a force to be reckoned with. She had impeccable style, often being the best- dressed person at any get-together. She was a great salesperson and was always garnering awards for being at the top of the leaderboard, whether she was selling insurance, cemetery sites, or advertising. She loved her family and would travel across the country to help a family member with a project. She used her creative skill and love of family to turn her “shack” into a lovely, warm home. Her attention to detail showed in everything she did. She loved to give gifts, picking up fun little finds on her many shopping trips. She could make any gift look like a million bucks.

Growing up between the ocean and the bay, Susan developed a love of “fun in the sun” from an early age. Going out on the boat was always a bright spot for her and if seafood was caught, so much the better. She was a premier shucker of oysters with her father and crab-picker with her mother.

She loved to walk wherever she went or lived. If you were lucky enough to go on a walk with her, you would be shown how important it is to walk backwards sometimes to work those different muscles. Gardening was a life-long passion and she became so adept at flower arranging that people would pay to have her do it for them. When she could no longer work, she took up painting and became quite proficient at it.

Susan is survived by her husband, Mark McClanahan, her step- children, Tammy Saberan (Aaron), and Casey Houchin (Steve), her stepgrandchildren, Morgan, Steven, Nicholas, Madison, Makenzie & Zackary, her motherin-law, Dolores McClanahan, her father, Robert M. Davis, and her siblings, Karen Davis Roach ( John), Joan Davis (Scotty), Sandi Fay ( John), and Ron Davis. She is pre- deceased by her mother, Grace T. Davis, and father-in-law, Buck (Alfred) McClanahan.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Susan’s name to Hospice of St. Mary’s or Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.
