Leonardtown school to stage Mary Poppins
Looking for a supercalifragilistic way to spend the weekend or a spoonful of sugar? Leonardtown Middle School will present the play Mary Poppins Jr. 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, and noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at 24015 Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown.
Come see the wonderful students of Leonardtown Middle bring this magical show to the stage. It’s a welcome return to theater after COVID cancelled last year’s production.
“It’s a bit overwhelming after two years off, but I’m thrilled to have a musical at LMS again. I missed not having one last year,” Director and music teacher James Bowser said.
The show stars eighth-grader Maire Bockey as practically perfect nanny Mary Poppins and sixth-grader Garrett Kirk as Bert, the jack-of-all trades chimney sweep. The rest of the cast is comprised of sixth- to eighth-graders.
Based on the P.L. Travers book series which later became one of the most popular Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins Jr. brings us into the dysfunctional home of the Banks family. When yet another nanny leaves, Mary Poppins floats in on an umbrella, bringing mag
ic and common sense to the children’s lives.
“This is such a fun show,” Bowser said. “It’s got something for everyone; comedy, drama, dancing and singing. Most people have seen the original Disney movie with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. This story and characters are mostly the same, but [this] show has several new scenes and characters that are really a lot of fun.”
Tickets are $5 and available at the door.
