The USTRC’s Ohio Clas­sic paid out some $77,536 to rop­ers from Ver­mont to Flor­ida to Ari­zona, with Joshua Lan­ning of How­ell, Michi­gan, and Kenny Van Pelt of Greenville, Penn­syl­va­nia, dom­i­nat­ing both the #9 and #9 Ex­clu­sive, bank­ing a to­tal of $10,690.

Van Pelt also won the #10 with Hick­ory Corners, Michi­gan’s Ja­son Ter­pen­ing for an­other $4,700, and was sec­ond in the #11 with Wat­son­town, Penn­syl­va­nia’s Zane Kil­gus for $1,690.

“I al­ways sup­port that rop­ing,” Van Pelt, who’s rid­den out­side horses most of his life, said. “I had seen Josh rope that day, and he asked me to rope that night. It’s rare that some­one can get matched up and be clean on eight steers.”

Lan­ning won the #11 with Ocala, Flor­ida’s Zach Kil­gus worth $2,820 and was third with Toledo, Ohio’s Nick Deleon for an­other $1,130. Lan­ning won the #11 Ex­clu­sive with An­so­nia, Ohio’s Adam Sch­lechty for $2,940 and the #10 Ex­clu­sive with Holly, Michi­gan’s Dusty Link for $3,820.

“I went to a few US rop­ings in Tex- as four or five years ago, and work had been get­ting in the way of ev­ery­thing,” Lan­ning, a line­man, said. “I freed up this year, and I have a cou­ple good horses, so I de­cided to start go­ing.”
