USTRC’S OHIO CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS EAST-COAST ROPERS
The USTRC’s Ohio Classic paid out some $77,536 to ropers from Vermont to Florida to Arizona, with Joshua Lanning of Howell, Michigan, and Kenny Van Pelt of Greenville, Pennsylvania, dominating both the #9 and #9 Exclusive, banking a total of $10,690.
Van Pelt also won the #10 with Hickory Corners, Michigan’s Jason Terpening for another $4,700, and was second in the #11 with Watsontown, Pennsylvania’s Zane Kilgus for $1,690.
“I always support that roping,” Van Pelt, who’s ridden outside horses most of his life, said. “I had seen Josh rope that day, and he asked me to rope that night. It’s rare that someone can get matched up and be clean on eight steers.”
Lanning won the #11 with Ocala, Florida’s Zach Kilgus worth $2,820 and was third with Toledo, Ohio’s Nick Deleon for another $1,130. Lanning won the #11 Exclusive with Ansonia, Ohio’s Adam Schlechty for $2,940 and the #10 Exclusive with Holly, Michigan’s Dusty Link for $3,820.
“I went to a few US ropings in Tex- as four or five years ago, and work had been getting in the way of everything,” Lanning, a lineman, said. “I freed up this year, and I have a couple good horses, so I decided to start going.”
