WHEN TO GO

While black marlin can be found year-round, feasting on bait concentrated around the high spots at Hannibal Bank and nearby Isla Montuosa, the ideal time for multiple shots at trophysize 500-plus-pound blacks is the “wet season,” which runs from July through September. That’s when the larger female black marlin move into the area to spawn. As an added bonus, you’ll encounter less boat traffic offshore during this time period, increasing the chance of raising multiple fish.

HOW TO GET THERE

Copa Airlines offers regular flights from Miami to Panama City, where anglers can opt to hop a same-day connecting flight to David, or stay overnight at the Hilton Panama as part of the VIP package offered by Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge. Either way, guests need to arrive in David by early afternoon to make the lodge-provided transfer to Pedregal Marina for the hourlong boat ride out to Isla Paridas.
