$House Republicans expand investigation of Harvard president

WASHINGTON – House Republicans are expanding their investigation into Harvard President Claudine Gay following allegations of plagiarism surrounding her work.

It is the latest salvo in a Capitol Hill fight with college presidents, as the House Education and Workforce Committee ramps up backlash against Gay and other leaders who were grilled earlier this month about antisemitism on campus.

Rep. Virginia, Foxx, R-N.C., said in a letter Wednesday, first obtained by Bloomberg News, that the House will examine whether Harvard holds its own faculty to the same academic standards as its students.

Earlier this month, the Harvard Board said in a statement that Gay will retain her spot as president following the antisemitism hearing. At the hearing, Gay was asked whether calling for the genocide of Jews violates her school’s code of conduct, and she said it depends on the context.

The board also launched an independent review of her published work after learning about concerns around three articles she published in October. The review found “a few instances of inadequate citation.”

After crash, Congress launching investigation into Osprey program

WASHINGTON – A congressional oversight committee has launched an investigation into the V-22 Osprey program following a deadly crash in Japan which killed eight Air Force special operations service members.

The entire Osprey fleet remains grounded following the Nov. 29 crash with the exception of limited Marine Corps flights in emergencies. More than 50 U.S. service members have died in Osprey crashes over the lifespan of the program, and 20 of those died in four crashes over the last 20 months.

The government of Japan, the only international partner flying the Osprey, has also grounded its aircraft after the Nov. 29 crash.

On Thursday the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Accountability sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin requesting a massive amount of documentation on the Osprey’s safety record to be delivered to the committee by Jan. 4.

Top US officials to visit Mexico for border negotiations

WASHINGTON – A delegation of top U.S. officials is expected to visit Mexico soon as negotiations over how to enforce immigration rules at the two countries’ shared border continue on Capitol Hill.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers are debating border policy changes as part of a larger conversation over U.S. assistance for Ukraine and Israel, which are top foreign policy priorities for the White House.

The upcoming visit to Mexico comes amid controversy over the closure of two rail crossings in Texas earlier this week. U.S. officials said the personnel needed to be redeployed to handle high numbers of migrants illegally crossing the border. Mexican businesses warn that the closings are hampering trade.

Kirby said President Joe Biden asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and White House homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall to travel to Mexico in the coming days to meet with López Obrador and his team to discuss further actions that can be taken to address the challenge.

A U.S. official said the trip would likely happen the Wednesday after Christmas. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss planning.

Biden signs order aimed at financiers of Russian military

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden signed an executive order Friday giving the U.S. Treasury Department the authority to target financial institutions that facilitate Russia’s efforts to bolster its defense industry.

The new sanctions authority is meant to gum up the Kremlin’s push to restock the Russian military’s depleted arsenal after nearly 22 months of fighting in Ukraine. Russia has already lost over 13,000 pieces of equipment, including tanks, drones and missile systems, according to a U.S. assessment.

The order also seeks to tighten existing restrictions on diamonds and seafood imported from Russia after a review by U.S. agencies.
