Central, Glendale highlight previous week
This past week saw area powers go head-tohead along with one of the more remarkable comeback victories we’ll see this season. It all set up a week ahead that features many critical conference showdowns.
Here’s what we took away from this past week before we head into the first full week of February.
Central leaves no doubt that it’s the area’s best and will host Parkview this week
After Tuesday night’s 60-49 win over Kickapoo, Central eliminated questions as to who’s the best team in the area. The Bulldogs have been the best team all year and they got their first win over Kickapoo in 15 years to prove it.
It wasn’t a surprise to anyone who’s watched the Bulldogs all year. Stacked up against the best teams in previous seasons, these Bulldogs would be right up there with some of the great Nixa and Kickapoo teams that have gone on to make recent state semifinal appearances. The Bulldogs have been that good and that deep.
Right now, junior standout Keion Epps has established himself as the favorite to take home area player of the year honors. He’s been the most consistent player on the floor and does a little bit of everything at a high level. You then add in other standouts like Tyrique Brooks, the team’s lone senior, with Dru Wells, Devin Sanford, Bryce Walker and a few others and you have a team that’s unquestionably the favorite to win the Class 6, District 5 tournament.
Central will, again, be favored when it goes up against Parkview this week when the Vikings appear to be the best team the Bulldogs will play for the remainder of the regular season. A trip to Rolla on Feb. 16 can’t be ignored. These Bulldogs play with a chip on their shoulder each game and there isn’t much of a concern as to whether they will bring it each time they step on the floor.
