Willard, Glendale punch tickets to quarterfinals
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Two Springfield area high school baseball teams punched their tickets to state quarterfinal games in their respective classes. A third southwest Missouri program could join them come Monday evening.
Here's how Willard and Glendale advanced to quarterfinal games.
Willard 6, Branson 0 — Class 5, District 6
Cam Jennings allowed only three hits and struck out six while leading the Tigers to their fourth district championship in five seasons. Shortstop Matthew Angel supplied most of the Tigers' offense by going 2 for 4 with four RBI and a triple.
Willard got the win despite finishing with just three hits. Jennings had the other on an RBI double.
The Tigers will play St. Francis Borgia, the team that knocked Glendale out of the Class 5 postseason a year ago, in the quarterfinals on May 25. A semifinal appearance would be Willard's fourth in five years.
Glendale 4, Nixa 2 — Class 6, District 6
Nixa led off the game with a two-run bomb from Wyatt Vincent but it's all the Eagles could push across. The Falcons scored four unanswered runs and advanced to their second state quarterfinal in as many years.
Alex Rankin finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI with Graham Satterwhite also pushing a run across. Glendale took the lead for good with a two-run fourth featuring RBIs from Mark Ross II and Drew Wedgeworth.
Wedgeworth earned his second district championship win on the mound with a complete game, eight hitter with three strikeouts and two first-inning runs.
Glendale will host Blue Springs on April 25 for a trip to the state semifinals.
