Household Hints

Dear Heloise: Our new rescue dog was having difficulty learning to like my husband. In fact, sometimes the dog would even growl at my husband for no apparent reason. Then I remembered a suggestion to take an unwashed T-shirt that my husband had worn and had his scent on it and put it in the dog’s bed. After doing this, the dog started to like my husband more. Perhaps the dog associated my husband’s scent with the comfort of his dog bed. — Sharon in California

Leftover chicken uses

Dear Heloise: I live alone, so a rotisserie chicken is ideal for me. After one or two meals, I debone the remains, saving the skin and bones, and freeze the meat. Then I make a broth with skin and bones. I strain the broth and use it to cook a favorite grain, which I then pour into greased muffin tins and freeze. When it’s time for a meal, in a bowl, pop in one or two “muffins,” chicken, frozen veggies and nuke. There’s a meal in a bowl. I enjoy your hints and use them often. — Donna, Rockville, Maryland

Reusing plastic bags

Dear Heloise: Last month I started saving the plastic bags that my home-delivered newspapers come in, intending to return them to the driver for reuse. However, I have found that I need to use them myself. I recently broke my finger and need to keep that hand dry and clean. I discovered that by putting my affected hand (and arm) inside the newspaper bag, the problem was solved. The coverage and flexibility are perfect. — Meredith Bleynat, Valdese, North Carolina

Long nails — sound off

Dear Heloise: My Sound Off concerns food service workers with inch-long nails. What kind of bacteria is under those nails? How are they properly cleaned after bathroom breaks? In this era of sickness, this should be a health department issue. Also, please stop putting your fingers inside the drink cups when handing them out to patrons. Thanks for letting me vent! — Jane, Fredericksburg, Virginia

Storing sheets

Dear Heloise: I add one step to your advice about storing sheet sets. I keep one pillowcase unrolled and put the rolled sets into that pillowcase. They all stay neatly together. Best regards. — P.W. in South
