A few things to know before making those holiday donations

- John North Better Business Bureau

Giving Tuesday is in two days. Encouraging people to do good on this day, Giving Tuesday is paying it forward whether that be making someone smile, helping a stranger or giving some of what we have to those who need help. Every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to contribute toward building the better world we all want to live in. If you’re considering joining others in Giving Tuesday, there are a few things you should know.

The holidays are a perfect opportunity to give to those in need. However, with so many ways to give, you may not know what to do. It’s good to come up with a plan and not fall victim to scammers.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips when donating:

■ Never give to a charity you know nothing about. Get literature from the organization and check out its website. Ask where your donation is going. Ask how much of your donation goes for general administration and fundraising expenses and how much is left for the services.

■ Give directly. This ensures the donation will not be delayed or even diverted by a middleman.

■ Don’t be pressured. If an organization is making you act quickly, it’s a red flag. A reputable organization will gladly walk you through the steps and give you all the time you need to decide.

■ Be sure to get a receipt or printed copy of your donation so you’ll have a record for tax purposes.

■ Don’t be fooled by an organization that has a similar name to a reputable organization.

■ Beware of the “sob stories” that will entice you to want to help and contribute in some way. Question phone solicitors or direct mail appeals which tell you nothing of the charity or offer vague explanations for spending your charitable dollars.

■ Determine if the charity’s registered with the state. Any charity incorporated or otherwise organized in Ohio, holding assets in Ohio and/or holding program services in Ohio, must register under the Charitable Trust Act.

The BBB evaluates charities against its 20 Standards for Charity Accountability, which look at their finances, governance, effectiveness and fundraising practices. Only after a charity meets all the standards will the BBB offer BBB Accreditation and use of BBB’S seal. Contact the BBB by visiting Bbb.org or calling 937222-5825 or 800-776-5301 for lists of BBB Accredited Charities and reports on ones you may be considering supporting. Visit sites like www.give.org, www.guidestar. org and www.charitynavigator.org to help you gather information in choosing where to give.
