Athletic passes help students with costs

Student athletic passes, which allow free entry into home games, have been available during the school year.

With lunch and breakfast no longer free to every student, the district looked for ways to help with other costs.

Parents/guardians were asked to fill out applications with student information and an electronic pass was awarded to those students, along with a free Indians T-shirt.

Team makes high school football playoffs

The varsity football team hosted the first round of high school football playoffs on Oct. 28 against the Lockland Panthers.

Mechanicsburg’s record heading into the playoff game was 8-2 with only a few returning starters from last year’s season.

After a successful night, the

Mechanicsburg Indians hosted the second round of playoffs on Nov. 4 versus Minster. The team put up a tough fight, but ultimately succumbed to the Minster Wildcats, ending their season with a 9-3 record.

Physics class takes part in design challenge

Congratulations to students in Mrs. Dietrich’s physics class. Students Brennin Eyink, Laney Marvin, Taylor Miller and Xavier Sanders were runners-up at the 2022 Champaign County Design Challenge.

This year, the design challenge was to create a cardboard and duct-tape boat that could be wind powered and hold at least one pound of sand. The boats needed to include a sail, hull and mast. Students worked with a mentor one day a week for the month of October. The design challenge was judged by Weidmann Electric and held at the Champaign Community Center.

Donuts with Grown-ups breakfast scheduled

The elementary PTO threw a “Donuts with Grown-ups” breakfast for students and their families, grades K-5th. This was a special event for students to share with their loved ones. Unfortunately, due to COVID, functions like this have not happened since 2019. Holding such events allows for growth and connectivity between families, students, and the school.

District working on holiday cards

The school district sends out special holiday cards every year. Art teachers distribute blank templates to their students and from there, magical holiday cards are created. The Central Office receives all submissions and chooses a top contender from every building for our district holiday card. Sometimes, the choice is too difficult, we end up with more than one for a building. The district sends the cards to staff as well as the winning students’ families.

District honors veterans at assemblies

On Nov. 11, Mechanicsburg held the annual Veterans Day assemblies. Schools invited all veterans with connection to the students and staff.

The event included a complimentary continental breakfast, followed by two assemblies; one for middle and high school, as well as elementary.

School Resource Officer John Shultz spoke of his 33 years serving in the U.S. Army and National Guard. Senior Master Sgt. Kristin Gould gave a speech to remind all of what Veterans Day is about and recounted her experiences to motivate students to always do their best, even when no one is watching.
