Showing the positive influence of Youth Connections program
It is always exciting as someone in the education field to see students grow and shine. I have been very proud of the success and accomplishments we have seen at the Clark County Educational Service Center (ESC) during the first half of this year. The beginning of the school year is great as we all get our bearings and find new ways to expand our reach and strengthen the ESC’S services for the community.
Among the many programs at the ESC, one we are very proud of is Youth Connections. The Youth Connections program stands out as a testament to how educators can positively impact the lives of students facing challenges in traditional school settings. This program, designed for learning acceleration and credit recovery, employs a hybrid model consisting of in-person small group classes and online coursework. The success of this approach lies in its adaptability to meet the specific educational needs of each student. Notably, the program also integrates a community service and work experience component, enhancing its impact.
The main goal of Youth Connections is to blend academics and career planning, guiding students towards different pathways for a bright future. Youth Connections Supervisor, Liza Holliday, has implemented a hands-on teaching approach. This involves empowering students to “teach” specific lessons based on their skills, such as the inspiring art class where students share their artistic expertise with their peers.
Another positive aspect of the program is its engagement with community members who share insights into various career opportunities. Notable speakers like
Joe Hunter from the Juvenile Detention Center and Mackenzie Rucker from the Springfield Fire Rescue Division have provided invaluable perspectives on their career journeys. Their experiences not only broaden students’ horizons but also motivate them to overcome challenges and strive for a brighter future.
The enthusiasm and commitment of our staff, coupled with the involvement of the local community, have created a positive and transformative learning environment for the students of Clark County. I always want to recognize and share my appreciation for our teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, related services, psychologists, substitutes and support staff who play a critical role in shaping the lives of these students.
As we approach the holiday break, it is crucial that we take the time to rest, rejuvenate, and reflect on the tremendous accomplishments of our staff and students. Let us celebrate the progress we have made together and carry this momentum forward, seizing new opportunities for growth and success.
