High School students to plant 700 saplings

Clark-shawnee students are partnering with the nonprofit Tree-plenish to help make their community more sustainable. Students plan to plant 700 saplings on May 4 to offset their school’s energy consumption from the past academic year. This is the second annual Treeplenish event at Shawnee High School.

Residents can order a sapling to be planted in their yard or sign up to volunteer to plant on the day of the event. Saplings are $5 and residents can choose between American sycamore, Sugar Maple and Blue Spruce saplings. The last day to order a sapling is April 4. Learn more at clarkshawnee.org.

Clark-shawnee partners with Thinktank

Clark-shawnee welcomes Thinktank’s Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE) to campus during the February and March Professional Development Days. COPE is a 2.5-hour simulation that allows participants to see poverty first hand through the eyes of real, local families. The simulation gave staff members a small glimpse into the daily lives and challenges of students in low-income families.

The COPE simulation at Clark-shawnee was made possible by a federal ARP Homeless Targeted Assistance grant. The purpose of COPE is to deepen the understanding of the reality of poverty, improve the practices and approaches to address poverty, and build relationships between parents and school staff to improve a student’s learning outcomes, said Thinktank.
