Check out all that public schools have to offer this spring

-

Although the recent temperatures do not feel like spring, the calendar certainly tells us that spring is here! Outside your windows, you will start to see flowers bloom and trees sprout leaves.

Spring is also a very busy time of year for public schools, and there are a variety of ways you can connect with and support local students.

With the start of spring comes the start of spring athletics. Baseball, softball, tennis along with track and field all start to ramp up as our student-athletes return to the outdoors. I am always amazed at the caliber of high school student-athletes right here in our own community. If you ever find yourself with a free evening, I encourage you to check out your school’s athletic schedule and go take in a spring game so you can root, root, root for your home team! It’s a great way to enjoy spring evenings and support local athletes.

It is not spring in our area high schools without the spring musicals! These productions are amazing and showcase the outstanding talent of our students. The beauty of living in Clark County is that you can attend one of many high school productions without having to travel far. This year, Shawnee High School students will be performing Disney’s High School Musical On Stage! There will be performances on April 19 and 20, and ticketing information will be available on the district website in the coming weeks.

There is a special week in May that I always look forward to. May 6-10, 2024, is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. This is a great opportunity for our community to express appreciation for all of the work that teachers, support staff and administrators do to support student learning. I encourage you to express your gratitude to the school staff who make a difference in the lives of your students.

Finally, it would not be spring if schools were not planning for graduation. Commencement exercises are a time-honored tradition to celebrate the culmination of our seniors’ K-12 educational experience. The Shawnee High School Class of 2024 Commencement Ceremony is May 23. Graduation is more than just pomp and circumstance and parties. It is an excellent opportunity to convey pride and support for the graduates in your life as they prepare for college, the workforce, or military service.

As we all look forward to warmer weather, take time to enjoy the many opportunities our public schools offer. Before we know it, summer will be here and we will be welcoming our incoming kindergarteners, the Shawnee High School Class of

2037. Kindergarten Registration for Shawnee Elementary opens June 3. The district is taking applications for open teaching and support staff positions for the 2024-2025 school year. Visit our website, clarkshawnee.org, for more information.
