JANUARY IS NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
One in four Americans will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime, according to the American Red Cross, who has reported “dangerously low” blood supply across the country since the pandemic. If you’re considering donating this month, here are some things to know before you go. • You can donate blood every 56 days. • You must weigh at least 110 pounds. • If you’re older than 70 but have given blood in the previous two years, you’re still eligible—just talk to your doctor. • You don’t need to know your blood type in order to give. • If you have received the COVID-19 vaccine, be prepared to share the manufacturer before your donation. • If you’re feeling sick, stay home—the Red Cross will only accept a donation 24 hours after symptoms have passed.
