Gaines to appear at YMCA, film festival
Scene … The YMCA Greenwich will feature a meet-and-greet with threetime Olympic gold medalist and ESPN and NBC swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. June 3 at the YMCA Olympic swimming pool. That same day, Storm’s documentary on the swimmer, “ROWDY,” will be shown at 2:30 p.m. at the Cole Auditorium at the Greenwich Library as part of the Greenwich International Film Festival. Out there … The Caliber Foundation, a nonprofit that supports victims, families and communities affected by illegal gun violence, will host a cocktail party at Alice + Olivia on Greenwich Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The event is dubbed an “Evening of Fashion and Peace,” and 20 percent of sales will go to the foundation. In 2012, former attorney Jessica Mindich, of Greenwich, began working with the Caliber Collection after meeting Cory Booker, who was then the mayor of Newark, N.J. The jewelry collection includes steel and brass cuffs and bangles made from shell casings taken from crime scenes, engraved with serial numbers from seized guns. Proceeds from sales fund gun buyback and amnesty programs. To date, 2,500 illegal guns have been taken off the streets and over $165,000 has been raised for police departments in Newark, Hartford, Detroit, Miami and the San Francisco Bay area from the sale of Caliber products. Great gala … The Global Lyme Alliance honored Lyme disease patients and researchers at its annual Greenwich Gala on May 12 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. Local resident Gretchen Carlson, TV journalist, female empowerment advocate and chairwoman of the Miss America Organization, was emcee. The three mothers serving as gala co-chairwomen, Carlson said, are “successful and resilient moms, strong in spirit and conviction,” acting as caregivers and supporters of daughters who have suffered from and continue to battle Lyme disease. Supporters were treated to a performance by singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben, whose mother, Janet Ruben, presented him with GLA’s Star Light Award for his Lyme disease outreach efforts. Dr.
