GLENBROOK
Liberty Garden, a memorial created in honor of Glenbrook couple Sean Rooney and Beverly Eckert, will be rededicated at 2 p.m. Sept. 9.
Rooney died during the 9/11 attacks. Eckert, his wife, was a 9/11 activist, and a proponent of creating the 9/11 Commission. She died in 2009 in a plane crash.
The Liberty Garden was first dedicated in 2002.
City and state officials will join the families of Rooney and Eckert to dedicate the renewed memorial garden during the ceremony.
NEWFIELD
St. John’s Lutheran Church will host a blessing of the animals ceremony from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Owners can bring their pets, in a cage or on a leash, to be blessed during the “Mass on the grass.”
WEST SIDE
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for improvements to Lione Park will take place at 1 p.m. Monday.
Mayor David Martin will be joined by local and state officials, as well as representatives of the Boys & Girls Club, to unveil the upgrades.
The state contributed more than $1 million to the improvements, and $4.5 million toward the second phase, which will include the construction of a new 18,000-square-foot teen center for the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford. With the new center, the Boys & Girls Club expects to serve more than 2,000 youth by 2020.
SPRINGDALE
Commuters will bid farewell this week to Larry Diomede, who is retiring as a conductor on the New Canaan branch of the Metro-North Railroad.
Diomede is known for his harmonica playing during the morning commutes, as well as his positive messages of encouragement to travelers.
The retirement party will take place at Tracks Bar & Restaurant at 920 Hope St. at 6 p.m. Friday.
