Town to honor favorite son for service
Scene … Former five-term first selectman and Greenwich native John Margenot will be honored for his continued service and dedication to the town at a ceremony celebrating the naming of the John B. Margenot Atrium at the Greenwich Public Safety Complex at 10 a.m. Saturday. Margenot, who has served on the Representative Town Meeting and the Board of Estimate and Taxation, works on the town’s Board of Ethics and volunteers at Greenwich Hospital. Out there … The Rummage Room at 191 Sound Beach Ave. in Old Greenwich will celebrate its 54th grand reopening at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Donations will also be accepted at the shop from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The shop, operated by the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church of Greenwich, supports local, national and international nonprofit organizations.
Scene … Former NBA star and ESPN’s “Get Up!” analyst Jalen Rose was seen outside Horseneck Wine & Liquor on East Putnam Avenue in Greenwich last Thursday afternoon.
Out there … The Second Congregational Church on East Putnam Avenue will kick off its annual Homecoming Weekend on Saturday with a series of outdoor public events and worship services at the church campus. It begins with a family-oriented Evensong Service at 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by a picnic and a screening of the movie “I Can Only Imagine.” The film, starring Dennis Quaid, chronicles the true-life, fatherand-son story of Christian rock star Bart Millard.
The journey of redemption and the power of forgiveness led Millard to write the hit song of the same name. Popcorn and drinks will be served. An informal worship service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 9. Out there … The 41st annual Norwalk Oyster Festival will return with food, music and fun for the family at Veterans Memorial Park on Seaview Avenue from Friday to Sept. 9. Crowds will be entertained by live music from The Short Bus, Funky Dawgz, Deep Banana Blackout, former lead vocalist of Journey Steve Augeri, and Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band. Funds raised will benefit the Norwalk Seaport Association’s educational programs and stewardship of the historic Sheffield Island Lighthouse, habitat restoration projects on the Norwalk Islands with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other projects. Picnic time … The Cos Cob School Homecoming Community Picnic this year will celebrate over 100 years of the neighborhood school’s history. The picnic will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the school’s field. The event will feature live music with Boogie Chillun & The ’80s Band, food trucks and tours of the school. All are encouraged to bring beach chairs, blankets and games. The rain date is Sept. 9.
On the field … The Christopher Sabia Memorial Wiffle Ball Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Cove Island Park in Stamford. Sabia — also known as “Sabes” — was a Stamford Legion Baseball executive, coach and player for over two decades before he passed away from cancer in July 2017 at age 39. He is survived by his wife, Emma, and son, CJ. MLB third baseman David Wright, a longtime friend of Sabia, will be in attendance along with Mets bullpen catcher and Stamford resident Dave Racainello. First- and second-place finishers will receive four premium tickets and four on-field pregame batting practice passes to a New York Mets or a New York Yankees game.
