Community skeptical over bulletproof backpacks

“The Stamford community can be as skeptical as they want on this topic but it doesn’t change the fact that my kids have had shields in their backpacks for 10 years. Call it stupid. Call it paranoid. Call it whatever you want. To me, it’s a small piece of insurance that could possibly save their lives one day.”

— pickettfence, via stamfordadvocate.com “This bulletproof bookbag is just a way of normalizing gun violence on school campuses. If that's your aim, then go for it. Then there'll be less motivation for the public to focus on ridding our society of the scourge of gun violence.”

Stamford schools closing early due to heat

“What some people don't understand is

that today we have a much more diversely able student population than 30 years ago. We have many kids with special needs and some are medically fragile who can't be in the heat. Also by law, the school system is supposed to provide the necessary accommodations for EVERY child to have an education.”

“For all the tough adults remembering their uphill both ways walks to their sauna schools .... there is NO A/C in tons of the rooms and temps go over 105 regularly... any child living within 1.5 miles of the school has to get themselves there and back in this heat...You walk to work, turn off the A/C, and walk home .... then tell me how easy they have it, you disconnected, SUV-driving morons.”

“Stamford High’s first building used to be so hot in the summer and some teachers didn’t have A/C in their room and we never had early release when it was super hot. We had to suck it up and have a full day of school. If I was able to do it when I was in high school, so can the other students.”

“If both parents work, and you have kids that need to be picked up and watched...it’s not easy to scramble and find your backup plan time and time again.”
