NORTH STAMFORD
The sixth annual St. Francis Miles for a Mission Road Race, a 5K run/walk course with chip timing through the back roads of scenic North Stamford, returns on Sept. 23. Free food and drinks will be available to participants and their fourlegged companions at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2810 Long Ridge Road.
The race starts at 9 a.m., followed by a “Dogapalooza” dog competition from 9:15 to 10 a.m.
The race entry fee is $40. The entry fee to Dogapalooza is $10. All dogs must be on a 6-foot leash to compete and will receive a “Miles for a Mission” bandana. To register for all events, visit runsignup.com/mfm.
Proceeds benefit this year’s race partner, Americares Free Clinic of Stamford, through the St. Francis Outreach Program. More than 200 people participated in last year’s event, which raised more than $18,000.

A celebration of Guatemalan Independence Day will take place at Columbus Park at 11 a.m. Sept. 16.

The Latino Foundation of Stamford will host a Mex- Independence Day and flag raising ceremony at 1 p.m. Sept. 23.
This is the first time Stamford will host a flag raising for Mexico alone. There will be a mariachi band, folkloric dances and light refreshments.
The ceremony will be at Stamford Old Town Hall, 175 Atlantic St.

NORTH STAMFORD
The first of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s “Fall Break Out Days” will focus on slime. “Slime may be the latest craze but we’ve been making it for years,” reads the description for the event, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the museum, 39 Scofieldtown Road.
“We’ll make some of our favorite slime recipes, a chance to meet some slimy (and scaly) critters, discover the wonderful world of slime molds and fungus, and more,” reads the description for the event. Participants will be able to make their own s’mores over the campfire.
Members of the museum can attend for free. Nonmembers can get in with the price of admission.

Prime: An American Kitchen and Bar will host its second annual “The Taste of Giving” event to benefit Kids in Crisis.
Prime will host a celebration of eclectic hors d’oeuvres and innovative cocktails from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Attendees can enjoy live jazz music and experience harborside views from Prime’s newly renovated cabana bar.

Kids in Crisis is Connecticut’s only free, around-theclock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community education programs for children of all ages.

A collection of parents, teen girls and educators will meet at Ferguson Library on Saturday for a girls entrepreneurship summit.
Some of the topics to be discussed include: improving college readiness and scholarship applications, preparing to become a business leader, turning your daughter’s passion into a business venture, and getting an edge on high-paying careers.
Speakers include Lynda Applegate, professor of entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School; Jonna Gerken, national chairwoman of the Society of Women Engineers; Vincencia Adusei, CEO of Vase Management, and Jennifer Openshaw, CEO of Girls with Impact.
