In the Championship Flight of the Hubbard Heights Club Championship concluded on Sept. 2,
Robert Colucci successfully defended his title by holding off
Marc Romano, 2-and-1 in the finals of the 16-golfer bracket played over two weekends.
In the Handicap Division of the Hubbard Height Club Championship concluded on Sept. 2,
Scott Failla successfully defended his title by defeating Michael
Carriero in the finals.
In an August 31-Sept. 2 Blind Partners weekend event, the duo of Dennis Vagnone and Will
McEwan (131) were the net score champions. Bill Stassano and David Chilenskas (140), Scott Parrish and Ron Sclafani (141)
as well as Tom Birkett and David Dorish (143) followed. Steve
Hagedus and James Savatsky
(169) were low gross score winners. STAMFORD’S VOZZELLA GETS HOLE-IN-ONE LUDLOW, Vt. – Thomas Vozzella of Stamford made a hole-inone on the fourth hole, a 148-yard, par-3, at Okemo Valley Golf Club on August 2. Vozzella, playing from the green tees, used a 9-iron.
Rose Petrone witnessed the feat. Vozella’s name will be added to a wall-plaque that hangs inside the Okemo Valley Golf Club clubhouse to honor those who have made a hole-in-one at OVGC. BALLO BROTHERS QUALIFY FOR PGA NATIONAL TOURNEY
FARMINGDALE, N.Y.—By taking the top two spots in the National Car Rental Metropolitan PGA Assistants Golf Championship Wednesday at Bethpage State Park’s Red Course, Stamford natives Mike Ballo Jr. and
Peter Ballo lead a list of 12 golf assistants who qualified for the 42nd PGA Assistant Golf National Championship, set for Nov. 15-18 at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Mike Ballo Jr., whose tworound winning total of 9-underpar 131 earned him a $10,000 winner’s check, is an assistant pro at Winged Foot Golf Club and is currently No. 5 in the Metropolitan PGA Assistants Player of the Year standings.
Peter Ballo, now an assistant pro at Silvermine Golf Club following a tenure at Old Oaks Golf Club, shot 8-under-par 132 in the Met PGA event and is No. 2 in the Met PGA Assistants Player of the Year standings.
Other area assistant pros going on to Port St. Lucie, Fla. include Jessica Carafiello of Innis Arden Golf Club, Danny Balin of Westchester CC and Frank Bensel of Century CC.
WOMEN’S GOLF
HUBBARD HEIGHTS In a two-day Queen of Clubs tournament that concluded on September 6 for the 18 Holers, Nancy Tersigni (140) was the net score champion.
In a Sept. 6 stroke play tournament for the 18 Holers, Jeanette
Chagaris (85) was low gross score winner. Nancy Tersigni
(68) was 1st low net score followed by Annika Kahm (69) and Roxy Gardner (70).
In a Sept. 6 stroke play tourney for the 9 Holers, Ruth Weinstein
(62) was low gross score champ. Teddy Chuckas (37) was low net score titlist.
In an August 30 Oners tournament for the 18 Holers, Jeanette
Chagaris (79) was low gross score champion. The low net winners were Annika Kahm
(60), Pat McGrath (61) and Barb Mulrooney (61).
In an August 30 Best Ball tournament for the 9 Holers, the quartet of Linda Colucci, Lorraine Labate, Marie Murphy and Ruth Weinstein (30) were low net score winners. STERLING FARMS
In a Sept. 4 stroke play event for the 18 Holers, in A/B Flights,
Jeanette Chagaris (88) was low gross. Nancy Carbone (71) was 1st low net on a match of cards with Patana Iamkrasin (71). In C Flight, Rhea Plotnick (111) was low gross scorer.
In a Sept. 4 stroke play event for the 9 Holers, in A Flight, Karen Hart (56) was low gross score while Linda Colucci (16) was low putts. In B Flight, Geri
Genovese (63) was low gross score with Lillian Yance (16) as low putts.
RUNNING
WESTPORT ROADRUNNERS SERIES
On Saturday, September 1st the Westport Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the 56th Annual Labor Day Weekend Ten Mile Road Race, the culminating race of the 2018 Road Runners Program, which started and finished at Staples High School.
Daniel Lennox of Darien won his first Road Runners race of the season as he led 152 runners over the challenging, but scenic course with the time of 1:00:40. The first woman to finish was Meredith
Anand of Westport in 17th place with the time of 1:09:33.
Second and third places in the men’s division in Saturday’s race were awarded to Piotr Kostyk of Bethel (1:00.45) and Alexy Chernov of Stamford (1:01.00). Second and third places in the women’s division were awarded to Olivia
McNeal of Wilton (25th overall, 1:12.40) and Laura Yarish of Westport (29th, 1:13.19).
