Hockey star spotted at the JHouse
Out there… Greenwich Library is serving up a free concert on Sunday, Jan. 13, featuring renowned bandleader Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. The Grammy-winning jazz band has been part of the New York music scene since the ‘70s, playing at the likes of the Rainbow Room and Carnegie Hall. The band has jammed with Leon Redbone, on “A Prairie Home Companion,” in Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Cotton Club” and on several Woody Allen soundtracks. They won a Grammy in 2012 for their compilation of music from the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire,” on which they also appeared. Doors open at 3 p.m. for the show.
Scene… Former NHL hockey center and hockey analyst Mark Messier was seen at Tony’s at the JHouse in Riverside recently.
Out there… Norwalk resident Kevin A. Knight has published a book on barefoot running called “Connections in the Raw: Musings of a Barefoot Runner.” The recently released book gives readers an insight on running barefoot, which he practiced to ease pain in his hip and back.
Out there… The Greenwich International Film Festival is offering a special screening of “A Private War,” from award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Bow Tie Cinemas on Railroad Avenue in Greenwich. It will be followed by a Q&A with Heineman. The film is based on the life of the legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin. Heineman, who has received GIFF’s Best Social Impact Film Award, Academy Award nominations and Golden Globe nominations, attended New Canaan Country School and Brunswick School. Scene… The YWCA Greenwich’s first annual “Women Who Inspire Awards,” which recognizes exceptional women in our community, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Greenwich Country Club. The event — which incorporates the best of the YWCA’s two signature events, the Spirit of Greenwich and the BRAVA Awards — will honor four Greenwich residents. They are: Stephanie Cowie, vice president at American Benefits Consulting in New York; Stephanie K. Schnabel, who leads corporate development at KPMG LLP; Janice Trebbi Richards, cofounder of Krois Trebbi Richards Marketing Consultants; and Dr. Katherine B. Vadasdi, director of the ONS Women’s Sports Medicine Center. Awards will also be given to the 2019 Next Generation Honorees: Isabel Allard, a junior at Greenwich Academy and founder and director of Generation Impact Fairfield County, and Sydney Noble, a senior at Greenwich High School and co-founder of Picking Up the Pieces, an autism awareness club.
