Man allegedly threatened to kill Stamford police captain

- By Tara O'Neill

STAMFORD — One city police officer was injured during an arrest with a combative man who was taken into custody for threatening to kill a police captain on Friday, police said.

Sherman Owens, 35, was charged with breach of peace and second-degree threatening.

While working on a detail to crack down on drivers operating under the influence, the captain spotted a group of people loitering and drinking on the corner of Smith and Stephen streets. With the help of two additional officers, the captain was able to disperse the crowd.

As the captain was clearing the call on his computer, a man — later identified as Owens, walked across the street and approached the captain as he yelled “(expletive) you” and “I’ll kill you,” according to police.

The captain got out of his cruiser and told Owens to stop where he was and when he didn’t, the captain tackled him and took him to the ground. There was a brief struggle, police said, and the two officers that helped with the crowd helped the captain handcuff Owens.

While the officers were detaining Owens, police said, he was “combative and spitting.”

Owens was taken to headquarters where, police said, he “continued his tirade,” before he started to comply with orders. He was held on a $500 bond.

One of the officers was injured during the struggle, police said.
