Why I’m running for the BOE

- Jack Bryant, a Democrat seeking a seat on the Stamford Board of Education, is former president of the Stamford chapter of the NAACP.

As a parent, one of my most rewarding experiences happened to be sitting in Stamford High School’s Boyle Stadium watching my son and daughters receive their high school diploma.

There was a path that started 12 years earlier for each of them.

There were some ups and some downs but in the end they managed to prevail.

Each year brought more challenges as the work became harder and harder but in the end they managed to prevail.

There were obstacles though no fault of their own that appeared but in the end they managed to prevail.

There were tears shed of sadness and happiness but in the end they managed to prevail.

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs, if not the hardest job, that God has given us. I made sure I was very involved in my children’s education journey. I learned a lot on the way. It was never a job that I would throw my hands up and give up on.

I was looking forward to the finish line at Boyle Stadium. That moment made everything I had to go through as a parent and everything my children had to go through worth the experience I referred to at the beginning of this message.

I want ALL parents to have that same experience. I believe my experience with my children’s educational journey can be beneficial to the Stamford Board of Education today. That is one of the main reasons I am running for the one year vacated seat on the Stamford Board of Education due to the resignation of Betsy Allen.

Another reason why I decided to run for this seat is my 10year service to the Stamford NAACP as president. I have a passion to speak up for people who don’t have a voice. Our children in this case.

As adults we can learn a lot from our students. I spend each year during April Spring Break Week traveling with high school students across the country visiting Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

It is special to me while walking across these campuses when our students finally get it when it comes to their future on one of these campuses.

When they finally get it I want to make sure they have the proper resume to get into these colleges.

That work begins in PreK. The following 12 years will make or break a lot of dreams for our students. I want to be that voice during their years of education that will speak up for them and a seat on the Stamford Board of Education will help me do that.

My passion for our children to be successful in their educational endeavors is what drives me and I want to be able bring that passion to the Stamford Board of Education with your help on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Vote row A.
