The Giving Fund

- By Karen Tensa

The new year is a time for making resolutions and looking ahead to a happy 2020. Many people resolve to show kindness and help others as a new year begins.

The Greenwich Time and the Stamford Advocate are committed to helping some of our neighbors who need a helping hand this holiday season.

We are publishing short stories about local people facing reallife difficulties — and asking our readers to join us in offering assistance through the Giving Fund.

Each case in the Giving Fund includes an estimated dollar amount that would help a local person or family pay for everyday bills such as rent payments, child care costs and transportation. Every dollar donated to the Giving Fund goes directly to the peoples in the stories, which are published every Thursday and Sunday throughout the holiday season.

Your donation may be small, but it can make a big difference to some of these families.

The names of those included have been changed to protect their privacy. The Stamford Advocate and Greenwich Time sponsor The Giving Fund in partnership with Family Centers and PersontoPerson.

Readers are invited to brighten the holidays of others by making a donation. Here are the personal stories of some neighbors in need:

Case #340) Gayle is a caring teenage mom with a young son. She is in her last year of high school and has already applied for college. She is determined to become a physician’s assistant. Gayle has a parttime job, is doing well in school and is diligently saving money to help with tuition. She also wants to eventually buy a car, so that she is not a burden to her family when she graduates and needs transportation to school and work. A gift of $300 would help Gayle to contribute toward her tuition and bring her closer to making her dreams a reality.

Case #341) Alice is a stayathome single mother. She not only takes care of her infant, but she is also in charge of her grandmother, who was diagnosed with dementia. Alice cannot work due to these responsibilities. However, she is forwardthinking about her future and enrolled in a class to become a phlebotomy technician. Alice lives with her mother, who is also a senior citizen and the only person financially supporting the family. This family now has the added concern of being behind in their rent. A donation of $500 would make a tremendous difference for this struggling family.

Case #342) One year ago, Abby’s baby started treatment for a serious medical condition. The baby is now 14 months old and continues to receive medical attention at Yale New Haven Hospital. Abby is not able to work due to her child’s multiple medical appointments. Her husband works hard to financially and emotionally support his family, while also devastated about his child’s diagnosis. Oftentimes, these parents are required to stay at the hospital when their child is receiving treatments, which means he is unable to work. A donation of $500 would benefit this distraught and overwhelmed family manage their finances.

Case #343) Ruth’s husband abandoned her and their two young children, who are under the age of 3. Ruth quit her job to take care of her newborn and receives little financial support from her husband. Ruth no longer has a car and uses public transportation to take her older daughter to preschool. The family members are constantly sick from the long walk every day to take the bus. Mom and her two children would greatly benefit from a donation of $400 to purchase warm winter clothing.
