John Caggiano
John Caggiano, a longtime resident of Westport, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on January 13, 2021, as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s. He was 82 years old.
John was born in Brooklyn on March 19, 1938, to John and Mafalda Caggiano. Growing up in Brooklyn, his family instilled in him a great love of his Italian heritage, which stayed with him his entire life.
A gifted artist, John studied art after high school and then went into advertising. John spent most of his career at the advertising agency, Doyle Dane Bernbach, rising to creative director and driving awardwinning campaigns for Volkswagen, IBM, Sony, Hershey, and Colombian Coffee. John brought originality and flair to everything he touched.
When he retired, John pursued his love for art with a passion, honing his sketching and painting skills at the Silvermine, Rowayton and Westport Arts Centers, and at the Westport Senior Center.
His work was often seen at local art shows. Throughout his life in Westport, he enjoyed all of the activities the town had to offer, from boating on the Long Island Sound to tennis and golf at Longshore to days and evenings spent at Old Mill and Compo Beaches.
John loved animals and could often be found walking his beloved rescue dog Bella around the Compo Beach area and visiting Winslow Dog Park.
He was known and adored by both the humans and dogs who visited these spots.
Above all, John loved his family: his wife of 57 years, Anita; his son Marco, daughter-in-law Elena, and beloved grandchildren Caroline and John; his son Roman; his sister Linda Brienza, brother-in-law Dr. Gene Brienza, niece Jill, and deceased nephew Dr. Michael Brienza; and sisterin-law Dolores Paliseno and nephews Michael and Robert.
John was filled with bluster and heart. He was known for his humor and his legendary stories. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Donations in John’s memoriam can be made to the Westport Senior Center, 21 Imperial Avenue, Westport, CT 06880, or Homes With Hope, 49 Richmondville Avenue, Westport, CT 06880. A memorial service will be held for John in late summer.
