Stamford woman charged in DUI crash while pregnant
STAMFORD — Police in Stamford charged a woman Saturday after police said she crashed her car into a stone wall at Cummings Park while eight months pregnant.
According to Stamford police, the blood-alcohol level of Karen ChavezEuceda, 36, was measured at three times over the legal limit on June 13 when she crashed her 2005 Nissan Altima into a stone wall.
The car, police said, “was being operated inside the park at a high rate of speed and crashed into a stone wall as the operator tried to negotiate a curve in the roadway.”
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the car abandoned, according to a release. Later that day, police responded to 293 Fairfield Ave. in response to a report of a woman injured in a car crash.
“Upon investigating, it was determined that this woman was the operator of the Nissan that had crashed inside Cummings Park,” police said. “She was transported to Stamford Hospital due to being eight months pregnant, injuries suffered in the crash and being intoxicated.”
Her blood-alcohol content was 0.27 percent, “more than three times the legal limit,” police said.
The fetus was a stillbirth, according to police.
Police said Chavez-Euceda initially denied being the operator of the vehicle but was charged Saturday following an investigation with operating under the influence, evading responsibility, interfering with police and failure to maintain lane.
Chavez-Euceda was released after posting $5,000 bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned on April 14.
