Rapinoe seals Olympic win, Valentine stops in at city Jersey Mike’s
Winning… Soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who shares a place in Greenwich with basketball star Sue Bird, scored the winning goal in a penalty shootout in the women’s quarterfinal soccer match against the Netherlands at Friday’s Olympic Games in Japan. The U.S. women’s soccer team will play Canada on Monday in the semifinals. Bird is at the Olympics, too, with the U.S. women’s basketball team set to play France on Monday in its continuing quest for a seventh straight gold medal.
Scene... Former Major League Baseball player and manager Bobby Valentine, now a candidate for mayor of Stamford, stopped by Jersey Mike’s Subs at its new location at 1209 High Ridge Road for opening day festivities on July 21. SKY Mercede of Forever Sweet Bakery in Norwalk supplied the sweet treats for the Jersey Mike’s staff at the event.
Filming… Hallmark is making another movie in Connecticut. “The Christmas Fix” starring actress and TV host Maria Menounos has begun filming at the Mystic Seaport Village Green and at the Muddy Waters Café on Bank Street in New London. Also filming recently in the state was the Hallmark Channel flick “Sand Dollar Cove” starring Chad Michael Murray, with scenes shot in Mystic; the Netflix Christmas movie “The Noel Diary” starring Justin Hartley and James Remar, which filmed in New Canaan and Stamford; and the Netflix thriller “The Good Nurse,” which was filming in Stamford with Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain
Out there… The Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens in Stamford is featuring jazz artist and vocalist Cookie Thomas in concert from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, on the Great Lawn.
