Barbecues raise money for swim charity
GREENWICH — COBS Bread in Riverside and Stamford are making a splash when it comes to fundraising for Swim Across America Fairfield County.
On Saturday, the COBS Bread store in Riverside held a barbecue with the proceeds going to support local cancer research.
The Stamford location will hold its barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at 1057 High Ridge Road .
Both stores will donate $1 of every sale of gourmet hamburger and hot dog buns through Aug. 8 to Swim Across America Fairfield County, which funds cutting-edge cures developed by the Stamford-based Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy.
On the day of the open water fundraising swim on Aug. 8, COBS will sell its famous bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on a bun with all funds donated to Swim Across America Fairfield County.
Swim Across America Fairfield County is in its 15th year of making waves to fight cancer. It is one of 21 open-water swims from Boston Harbor to under the Golden Gate Bridge offered by the national nonprofit Swim Across America. Each swim supports a local beneficiary — the Fairfield County swim has generated $4.3 million to support 11 scientists working on cancer gene therapy treatments at Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy. Over the years, Swim Across America has raised more than $100 million to fight cancer.
