Why we endorsed Simmons for mayor

-

It is time for bold leadership and new ideas. It is time for an inspirational leader who can bring our city together. It is time for government that is responsive, respectful, and works for all of us, because it is representative of all of us. It is time for Stamford to realize its full potential.

It is time for Caroline Simmons for mayor.

The challenges before our city are real: aging roads and bridges, hazardous mold in our schools, and a transportation center unworthy of a city of Stamford’s stature that is unable to meet our needs. These issues compromise our quality of life and limit our city’s ability to fully thrive. They also require new and innovative thinking and solutions and a mayor who understands how to make government work for the people it serves.

As Stamford’s next mayor, Caroline Simmons will bring bold leadership, new ideas and results-driven experience to our city.

That is why the Stamford Democratic City Committee (SDCC) endorsed Caroline Simmons as the Democratic Party’s candidate for mayor. Some of us are new city committee members and some of us fought and won difficult primaries in 2020. Others are community leaders and Board of Representatives members who have honorably served their districts for years.

But this year, one thing binds us all together: as we talked to voters in our districts we heard frustration with the status quo approach. Many see our city government as out of step, unresponsive, and failing to offer solutions to problems that were not only holding Stamford back but diminishing our quality of life. People are yearning for a leader who reflects the Stamford of today.

As the official representatives for Democrats in Stamford, the SDCC is tasked with interviewing, vetting and endorsing candidates for office. It is one of our most fundamental responsibilities and an obligation we all take very seriously. We invest considerable time in the process, and all candidates seeking the nomination are given the chance to address the SDCC to make their case for the nomination.

We chose Caroline Simmons over the incumbent mayor because we believe that it is time for new Democratic leadership and know Caroline has the experience, relationships with state and federal officials, and is ready to step into the highest elected office in the city.

For Stamford to recover stronger than ever, we can no longer accept a businessas-usual approach from our city government. Our city is wonderfully diverse, with a population of new and long-time residents, young and old, who chose Stamford to raise a family, or to take a new job, or to attend the Stamford branch of our highly regarded state university. Stamford is a vibrant city that deserves leadership prepared to take us into our next phase as Connecticut’s second-largest city.

Caroline Simmons is that leader.

Caroline’s qualifications are impeccable. She is a former Homeland Security official, a champion for women, and a mom. While at the Department of Homeland Security, Caroline worked to keep our country safe from cyber-attacks, violent extremism and gun

violence, and she helped to ensure that U.S. staff on the ground in Kabul, Afghanistan, were safe and secure.

At Elevate, the Yale University policy lab where she currently works, Caroline focuses on maternal mental health policies to help families thrive. She is also a member of our state delegation as a representative for the 144th district. She uses her voice as co-chair of the Commerce Committee in Hartford to advocate for our city and has secured more than $300 million of state funding to help our schools, roads, nonprofits and small businesses.

Caroline and her husband are raising their two young sons here, and she sees the tremendous potential in Stamford and brings a renewed sense of optimism for our city. Her plan will move us ahead and create a responsive and respectful government that works for everyone.

As the endorsed Democratic candidate for mayor, Caroline Simmons offers a new way forward and will get the job done. On Sept. 14 we urge all Democrats to vote for Caroline Simmons in the Democratic primary for mayor. We need a candidate at the top of the Democratic ticket with the grit, determination and track record of accomplishments needed to win on Nov. 2 and is ready to seize this critical moment and lead Stamford forward. The future of our city depends on it.
