High school football is back

The Greenwich defense scored two touchdowns and the offense took it from there as Greenwich beat Westhill 49-6 on opening day for both teams.

STAMFORD — Greenwich defensive lineman Cam Doyle was telling coaches before the game he had a feeling he was going to get his hands on a pass.

What Doyle did not anticipate was snagging a ball tipped at the line and running with it to the end zone but that it just what happened in the second quarter of Greenwich’s game against Westhill.

“It’s funny I called it today. I was talking to coach and I told him ‘you’re going to see me haul one in’ and surprisingly, thank God, I got one in. It felt so amazing,” Doyle said. “(The defensive line) looked as good as I thought we would. The linebackers were getting mad at us on the sideline because our D-line was playing too well.”

The Greenwich defense scored two touchdowns on the day and the offense took it from there as Greenwich beat Westhill 49-6 on opening day for both teams.

Greenwich’s defense got the first score of the game with John Scarlata jumping a screen pass on the third play of the game and bringing the interception in for a 22-yard touchdown return.

The Cardinals would add another touchdown when quarterback Jack Wilson hit

James Wailgum or a 19-yard touchdown.

Greenwich’s defense kept giving the Greenwich offense good field position and the offense took over in the second quarter.

Greenwich got a 57-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Chason Barber.

After Doyle got his pick-6, Greenwich’s offense scored again with Wilson connecting with Wailgum again, this time for a 41yard touchdown pass.

Greenwich lead 35-0 at halftime.

“Our defense did a lot of great stuff today and gave us a spark early,” Greenwich coach Anthony Morello said. “This is a special day with 9/11 and there are even more emotions in this game on top of the long layoff they guys have had. Our defense came out firing. Two defensive touchdowns will always put you in a good position to win. We pressured the quarterback start to finish and

resulted in some really positive things for us as a team.”

Greenwich got another touchdown in the third with Thomas Foster diving in from the 1-yard line.

Westhill would get on the board in the fourth quarter with Jordan Reyes hitting David Moodie for a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Greenwich rounded out the scoring when Jake Carifa picked up a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff and ran it back for a 60-yard touchdown.

“We got a lot of work to do,” Westhill coach Aland Joseph said. “We were just outmatched today. Greenwich is a great team. This is a good test for us early and luckily, it’s not he last game, it’s the first. We have a lot to learn from it. We will watch the film and try to get better.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME Jack Wilson, Greenwich.

The Greenwich quarterback threw three touchdown passes playing in his first varsity game, all in the first half before being removed

at halftime with the game already out of reach.

QUOTABLE

“The offense is still a work in progress and there are a lot of things we can do that we haven’t done yet,” Morello said. “We were able to sustain some drives. We backed ourselves up a little with penalties and had some issues early on in the run game. We overcame those with some big plays. It’s great to see Jack (Wilson) get his first varsity game reps.”
