Valentine offers unity

-

I am not from Stamford, I am a Yankees fan, and I had never met Bobby Valentine until his birthday party mayoral announcement. But I remember like it was yesterday the feeling of unity Bobby provided my seventh-grade self and the entire Long Island community in New York’s darkest hour.

Having lived in Stamford for three years with my wife, Golden Retriever, and newborn daughter, Bobby reflects my vision for how to unite a city full of big doers, not big talkers. I want a mayor with a track record of success centered on unity and inspiration that reminds us all what leadership looks like.

Unfortunately, perception is perceived as reality, and like many young families moving to Stamford, we are renting until we find a house. Schools are the most important decision when it comes to home ownership, and the perception of Stamford schools is reflected in the state of the buildings.

I have met many teachers in line for coffee or at the deli, and I will say their passion for their job in spite of the crumbling school infrastructure is inspiring. Teachers and students deserve better.

When I researched the history of Waterside, where I live, I came across a 1977 article from The New York Times describing the neighborhood. After many walks on Southfield Avenue, I can say it doesn’t seem like much has changed. Stamford needs a mayor for those who have been left behind in the development boom.

It has been said baseball and Bobby Valentine united the world after 9/11. It is that same inspiration and perspiration while leading from the front that Stamford needs now. Bobby has united us once, and let’s have him do it again. I think we all want to feel that same unity and community again.
