Smith, Trumbull too much for Stamford in loss

STAMFORD — After having to rally to beat Ludlowe by one point in the second game of the season to avoid an 0-2 start, something clicked for the Trumbull football team.

Since then, the Eagles have allowed just 7 points in three games, including a win over then ranked Shelton.

Saturday at Boyle Stadium, Trumbull kept on rolling, beating Stamford 48-0 as it prepares for the biggest game of the year next weekend against No. 4 Greenwich.

“That one play Corbin (Smith) made against Ludlowe, was a springboard for us for the way we have been playing football the last three weeks,” Trumbull coach Marce Petroccio said. “We came in here, we did what we needed to do and now we are going to get ready for a very big game. It’s been a long time since Trumbull High had a big game in week 6. We are excited for the game next Friday night.”

Trumbull has been clicking on offense, working the ball to all of its weapons.

“Our offensive coordinator does an awesome job being able to figure out what they are going to give us,” Petroccio said. “With the weapons we have, if they are trying to stop Corbin, we can go to some other places. And (quarterback Hunter Agosti) is having a fantastic year.”

Smith scored three times in the first half for Trumbull which took a 34-0 lead into the midway break.

Smith’s first score came on a 6-yard run after a direct snap; the second was on an 8-yard pass from Agosti and the third came via another direct snap, this time resulting in a 5-yard touchdown run.

Agosti threw three touchdowns in the first half, one to Smith; a 48yard link up with Justin Delaney and 34 yard scoring pass to Owen Solano.

In the third quarter, Trumbull recovered a Stamford fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and Agosti dove in on a 1-yard plunge.

Stamford is starting a

very young team, including at quarterback where freshman Ejai Presley got the start for the secondstraight game.

“There was a lot of youth out there. We are still making silly mistakes but we have some guys out there getting valuable varsity experience which will bode well for us in the future,” Stamford coach Jamar Greene said. “We are working trying to get a ‘W’ for our seniors at some point in the season. We will get Presley the training he needs and we think he’s going to be very good.”

Hunter Agosti, Trumbull, QB, Jr: Agosti had three touchdown passes and ran another in, working the ball around to all his weapons on offense.

“Week one (against Staples) was a devastating loss and since then we have worked so hard,” Agosti said. “Obviously Corbin is on another level but all the guys we have on offense are amazing. Any guy can beat any guy ono the other team. I trust all of them. Next week is a huge game and we know it is going to define our season. We have to win this one and we are going to work our tails off this week.”
