AAA: Gas prices jump 11 cents in a day, ‘poised to go even higher’

- By Liz Hardaway

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Connecticut hit $4.08 per gallon on Saturday, according to data from AAA.

This is an 11-cent jump from Friday’s $3.97 per gallon.

Gas prices have been rising sharply this past week since Russia, one of the world’s top energy suppliers, invaded Ukraine. Just last Saturday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Connecticut was at $3.72, showing a 36 cent increase in a week, according to data from AAA.

Experts with AAA are also attributing growing demand and issues in the global supply chain to the hike in gas prices.

“The market is very volatile and the high price of crude is driving prices at the pump along with various other factors,” said Fran Mayko, public affairs specialist for AAA Northeast. “Gasoline prices are poised to go even higher and will likely increase with the continuing conflict in Ukraine.”

Different parts of Connecticut are seeing higher prices than others.

As of Saturday morning, Fairfield County has the most expensive gas at $4.12 per gallon. The second-highest prices at the pump can be found in Windham County, at an average of about $4.10 a gallon, AAA reports.

The cheapest gas in the state can be found in Litchfield County at $4.01 a gallon on average, and then in New Haven County at $4.06 a gallon.

Other counties sit above $4. On average, a gallon of regular gas costs $4.09 in New London

County, $4.08 in Hartford County and $4.07 in Tolland and Middlesex counties, according to AAA

data.

Experts are unsure exactly how high gas prices will go.

As the war in Ukraine continues, and potentially more sanctions are imposed on Russia, “Only time will tell how high prices will go in this state — and in the nation,” Mayko added.
