Desperate Republicans

- Richard Lee, Stamford

Like lemmings, Republicans in the House of Representatives have been prostrating themselves for former president Donald Trump to satisfy Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Now they are giving Putin the biggest Christmas present he could have wanted — an open road to Kyiv and his theft of Ukraine.

By linking U.S. financial aid to Ukraine to funding to tighten immigration controls on the Mexican border, Republicans are endangering the lives of millions of Ukrainians and their democratic homeland.

During his presidency, it was obvious that Trump — for some reason — went far beyond normal bounds to act like a sycophant in his praise for Putin. Now Trump’s own sycophants in the House, are revealing their own allegiance to Putin over the freedom of a U.S. ally.

It should make one question the loyalty of these Republicans to their country. It’s clear that they have no qualms about Russia conquering Ukraine and threatening the rest of Europe. House Republicans could easily introduce a separate bill to increase immigration controls at the Mexican border, but instead they have chosen to make the United States look like a weak, undependable global ally.

In short, House Republicans are holding Ukraine and its Democratic supporters captive — some might call it extortion. At the same time, they would rather bow to the wishes of their disgraced former president and waste time, energy and money trumping up ridiculous impeachment charges against President Joe Biden.

Now, they are also diverting their attention from truly important global and domestic matters by investigating the president’s son for things that have no real impact on our country’s safety or future.

But all this is not surprising. Republicans are desperate to retain power in Washington and will do anything to keep it.
