Joan Somma age 81 passed away at her home after a long illness on June 18th with her loving family by her side. A Stamford resident for 50 years, Joan grew up in Pelham Manor NY, and graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1958. Joan served as a field control manager at Young & Rubicam after college. She eventually landed as manager at Air Express Internatio­nal where she finished her career. Throughout her life, Joan was active as a volunteer at St Gabriel’s Parish, and various Stamford Public Schools. She was also a fundraiser for the March of Dimes, American Lung Associatio­n, American Legion and Kiwanis Club of Stamford. Joan was an avid tennis player, and equally loved ballroom dancing and playing bridge. She is survived by her life partner and husband of 55 years, Joseph J. Somma, daughters Virginia Somma Guido (Paul), Cynthia Lawn (Christophe­r) and sons, Lawrence (Elizabeth) and Joseph Jr. (Kristen). She also leaves behind 8 beautiful grandchild­ren (Christian, Avery, Bridget, Kendall, Clark, Ryan, Pilar and Jake) and one brother, Frank Cuzzi. A celebratio­n of Joan’s life will be held at Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home on Summer Street from Wednesday, June 20th with viewings from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Masses will be held Thursday, June 21st at St. Gabriel’s Parish on Newfield Avenue at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Joan’s memory to the Kiwanis Club of Stamford.
