STAMFORD — Andy George, who switched parties last year and opposed the schools superintendent’s contract, has been named the new president of the Stamford Board of Education.

George replaces David Mannis, who was not reelected.

George began his tenure with the Stamford Board of Education in 2015 when he was elected as a Republican after a failed run in 2014. However, two years into his tenure, George changed parties following the election of President Donald Trump. He said Trump “doesn’t reflect the values” of the Republican party.

George ran for the board again as a Democrat in November 2017, replacing former board president Geoff Alswanger. George won the spot with 10,935 votes.

According to his campaign website, George and his wife, Amy, have lived in Stamford since the 1980s. They have three children who attended Stamford Public Schools. While his children were in the school system, George taught Junior Achievement, co-pro- duced the Stamford AllSchool Musical, coached soccer and as a member of the Stamford High School governance council and citizen’s budget committee.

George has worked in finance and accounting and ran with hopes of improving facilities in the schools to accommodate increasing enrollment.

Jackie Pioli, a family advocatewho beat Mannis in his run for a second term, was sworn onto the board Tuesday night by Mayor David Martin. Mannis and Pioli went head-to-head last month for the sole available Democratic seat with Pioli winning by about 2,000 votes.

Pioli has worked in banking. A Stamford Public Schools parent, she was awarded a Parental Involvement Recognition Award from the State Education Resource Center.

Republican incumbents Mike Altamura and Frank Cerasoli were sworn in for their second terms.

In addition to electing George as the board chairman, board members selected Jennienne Burke to serve as vice president and Altamura to continue serving as secretary. Board member Nicola Tarzia will continue serving as assistant secretary.
