Demolition will close lane of Washington Boulevard

STAMFORD — The demolition of one of downtown’s cylindrical towers will close one lane of Washington Boulevard this weekend. Another lane and the southbound side closest to City Hall will remain open, but the city is asking residents to consider an alternate route.

Starting 8 p.m. Friday, workers will begin taking down the main St. John Tower structure, knocking it down floor-by-floor from the top. Demolition crews have already razed the first- floor retail portion of the building and a pedestrian bridge over Tresser Boulevard.

The leveling of the tower, done with an orange high-reach excavator, will “continue around-the-clock” through the weekend, according to a city news release.

The right lane closest to the demolition will be closed to provide a large enough clearing between drivers and the demolition, according to the city, and will re-open at 4 a.m. Monday. It will remain open to traffic through the work week.

Next Friday evening, the lane will again close for demolition. The lane will remain closed through 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21.

The other two towers, still occupied, are not coming down and will see millions of dollars allocated toward renovations from the developer now tearing down Tower A.

Lennar Multifamily Communities will send $4.3 million to St. John Urban Development Corp. in lieu of including affordable units in the new 16story building, expected to begin being built in spring.
