Auriemma to have medical procedure
Status for Sunday is uncertain
CHICAGO — UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma is scheduled to undergo a medical procedure on Wednesday to alleviate symptoms caused by diverticulitis, the school said in a statement.
Auriemma’s status for Sunday’s game against
Oklahoma at Mohegan Sun Arena has yet to be determined. UConn said in its statement released Tuesday afternoon that “a short stay in the
hospital and quick recovery are expected.”
If Auriemma is unavailable, associate head coach Chris Dailey would likely slide over one seat on the bench to fill his shoes. Auriemma, 65, has missed only nine games during his legendary 35year career at UConn, including a road trip last February to Tulsa and Wichita State because of a stomach virus. The Huskies have won all nine with Dailey coaching.
The No. 2 Huskies beat No. 16 DePaul 8474 on
Monday to improve to 90 on the season. The game against Oklahoma is their final one of the calendar year, before they resume play Jan. 2 against Wichita State in Hartford.
UConn has won all 12 meetings with the Sooners, most recently a 7263 victory in Norman, Okla., last December, in which the Huskies overcame a 12point deficit in the second half.
Auriemma’s procedure was first reported by Carl Adamec of the Manchester Journal Inquirer.
