Stamford man faces gun, drug charges after Greenwich arrest

- By Tara O'Neill

GREENWICH — A Stamford man remained in police custody on a number of charges after he was arrested last week on gun and narcotics charges in Greenwich, according to police.

He was arrested after an incident that began at about 2:30 p.m. April 30, when officers saw a black Jeep with a rear plate marker light out, that was driving “suspiciously” through several Riverside and Old Greenwich neighborhoods, police said. Those areas have previously been targeted for vehicle thefts and breakins, police said.

When officers pulled the car over on Arch Street, they smelled marijuana coming from the driver’s window of the Jeep, according to police.

The driver, later identified as Anthony Belmont, had “glassy, red eyes,” a police report said. The report indicated that Belmont admitted to the officers he had smoked marijuana before driving his vehicle.

When officers told Belmont to get out of the vehicle, he “secretly attempted to discard a small baggie onto the ground that contained two small, round blue pills,” the report said.

While officers detained Belmont, he admitted there was a loaded gun under the driver’s seat of the Jeep, the report said.

Officers found a 9mm Ruger and a fully loaded 10-round magazine under the driver’s seat, as well as a smoking pipe with marijuana residue in the back seat, the report said. Belmont admitted both items were his, the report said.

Police said Belmont refused to submit to chemical testing.

When officers searched Belmont, the report said he was allegedly in possession of more narcotics and a grinder with less than a half-ounce of marijuana. The pills tested positive for Clonazepam, a controlled substance. Police said he did not have a prescription for it.

Belmont, 25, of West Hill Road, was charged with weapons in a motor vehicle, possession of a large capacity magazine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, operating under the influence and failure to have two working marker lamps.

He was unable to post $25,000 bond and remained in police custody. He is scheduled to appear in court May 28 in Superior Court in Stamford.
