Cops: After fleeing, car thief arrested bailing out brother

- By Tara O'Neill

NEW CANAAN — Two brothers face charges in connection with the theft of a vehicle from a Welles Lane home that was found nearby with one of the men trapped inside, police said.

Police said the man trapped inside the stolen vehicle was taken into custody at the scene, while the other man was arrested when he later came to the police station to bail out his brother.

Lt. Jason Ferraro said police responded to the area of Welles Lane around 11 p.m. Saturday for a report of vehicles at a residence actively being rifled through and a Range Roger being stolen from the driveway. He said the vehicles were unlocked, and the Range Rover key was left inside the car.

Police found the stolen Range Rover on Frogtown Road near Welles Lane on its side. Ferraro said the vehicle backed up onto an embankment and rolled over, trapping 21-year-old Mahmoud Hosny, of Batter Terrace in New Haven.

Ferraro described Hosny as “the individual responsible for stealing the Range Rover and entering the vehicles in the driveway of the residence on Welles Lane and stealing items from the unlocked vehicle.”

As officers arrived, a vehicle was seen leaving the area. Ferraro said officers got the license plate and later found it was being driven by Mohamed Ahmed Hosny, 20, of Lenox Street in New Haven — the brother of Mahmoud Hosny.

In the stolen Range Rover, Ferraro said, officers found items of clothing valued at about $2,200 that were taken from the other vehicle in the driveway of the Welles Lane home.

Mahmoud Hosny was taken into custody at the scene and charged with third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit a Class D felony. His bond was set at $5,000.

While at the police station, Ferraro said Mahoud Hosny called his brother to bail him out. Mohamed Ahmed Hosny showed up to bond out his brother and officers noticed he got out of the same vehicle they saw fleeing the Frogtown Road area, Ferraro said. Officers saw a gun — later determined to be an air-soft facsimile firearm — in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, Ferraro said.

“Based on the evidence from an investigation into this incident it was determined that Mohamed was involved in the larceny of the items from the vehicle and the theft of the Range Rover,” Ferraro said.

Officers took Mohamed Ahmed Hosny into custody on charges of disobeying the signal of an officer, two counts of conspiracy to commit a Class A felony and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. His bond was set $55,000.
